Join our Diesel Technician program where you can gain the entry level skills required to start a career in automotive repair and maintenance.

Diesel technicians work in a variety of settings overseeing and improving the performance of modern diesel engines and commercial vehicles, as well as sophisticated heavy equipment systems with electronic functions and advanced computer controls. Employed by major trucking companies, delivery enterprises, municipal transit systems and other transportation organizations, diesel technicians serve their customers with job titles such as Diesel Service Technician, Diesel Technician and Diesel Mechanic.

The program is delivered through an intensive, hands-on lab approach allowing you to concentrate on practical skills, education and execution alongside supplemental online curriculum. You will become proficient in preventative maintenance and inspections by performing procedures in electrical, brakes, lubrication, hub seals, HVAC, after-treatment systems and diagnostics equipment. Our program covers the following key areas and topics:

  • Heavy Duty Automotive Foundations and Safety
  • Electrical and Electronic Systems
  • On-Board Diagnostics
  • Tire Suspension and Brakes
  • Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning
  • Exhaust Aftertreatment Systems
  • Preventative Maintenance and Inspection
  • Employment Preparation

What courses will I take?

Diesel Technician is offered as a two-course program. Registration in both courses is required, with sections offered each fall and winter.

What credentials can I earn?

After completing this program, you will be eligible to sit for the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Diesel Engine Entry Level exam. A certification will be issued once you complete and submit the one-year work experience requirement.

In addition to helping you qualify for entry-level diesel mechanic positions, this program is ideal if you're interested in pursuing subsequent advanced training, and eventually industry certification, in specific areas or manufactures.

The total program cost for Anne Arundel County residents is $2,960. This cost includes instruction, textbooks and lab supplies.
